About this reference
What this site covers about garage workbenches, what it leaves out, and how its dated notes are presented.
What the site covers
This site is a card index on the garage workbench and its parts. Each card covers one part or one type of bench, says what it is made of, and sets it beside its neighbours. The purpose is to help a reader judge a bench for a tall garage workshop or a small workshop.
- Freestanding, wall-mounted, rolling and folding benches
- Bench tops, their materials and their flatness
- Vises and the fittings that hold work
- Dog holes, planing stops and hold-fasts
- Sawhorses and other portable supports
- Setting a bench to a working height
What it leaves out
The site leaves out three subjects. It does not cover power tools or the wiring that supplies them. It does not cover fixing benches to walls or to the structure of a building. It does not cover finishes or the chemicals used on wood. Where a task could cause injury or needs a qualified person, the card says so and keeps to general points.
Dated notes
Each note shows the date it was published.
How each card is arranged
Each card opens with what the item is. It then lists the parts of the item and sets it beside its neighbours, often in a table. Terms are defined the first time they appear.
The home page, Workbenches for the home garage, lists the cards and what each one covers. Readers who want short answers on height, tops, vises, fixing and sawhorses can start with Common questions about workbenches.
